Dell calls for in-person work five days a week for employees

Dell told hybrid and remote employees last Friday that they are expected to come into the office five days a week starting in March, according to a company memo, potentially affecting thousands of Massachusetts-based employees.

On Jan. 31, CEO Michael Dell sent an email that told employees who live within an hour of a Dell office to come to work in person effective March 3, according to the memo obtained by Business Insider.

“We remain committed to flexibility within your workday, and you should continue to work with your manager to meet your needs,” the CEO wrote. “But for the most part, you should plan to work in the office five days a week.”

A Dell spokesperson confirmed the report to Boston.com.

“We continually evolve our business so we’re set up to deliver the best innovation, value and service to our customers and partners,” the spokesperson wrote in a statement. “That includes more in-person connections to drive market leadership.”

Dell has offices in Franklin and Hopkinton, where it purchased EMC Corp. in 2016. The company has 5,000 employees in Massachusetts, according to the state’s Department of Economic Research.

Dell joined other companies in ending hybrid or remote work offerings, such as Amazon, which enacted its order on Jan. 2, and JPMorgan, which is also starting in March.
