Kraven the Hunter has concluded its box office run, and the box-office bomb is now one of the lowest-earning comic book films in cinema history. The film’s budget was reportedly over $150 million.
ComicBookMovie.com reports the latest and likely final box-office returns for Kraven the Hunter came in at $59 million worldwide, making it one of the lowest-grossing superhero movies of all time. The film, which starred Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Sergei Kravinoff / Kraven, explored the Marvel Comics character’s complex relationship with his father, Nikolai Kravinoff (Russell Crowe). Throughout the film, Kraven seeks out vengeance, becoming the world’s greatest hunter on a journey that would lead up to the character becoming one of Spider-Man’s greatest adversaries.

The future of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, which includes Tom Hardy’s Venom films, now looks dubious. Kraven the Hunter becoming a box-office bomb sees it join other SSU films, Morbius and Madame Web, both of which were commercial failures in their own right. Kraven the Hunter‘s meager $59 million returns are a new level of failure for the franchise — both Madame Web and Morbius cleared over $100 million each.
The failure of Kraven the Hunter at the box office appears even worse when compared to Venom: The Last Dance, the SSU film that was released merely months before it. The third installment in the Venom franchise pulled in an impressive $479 million on a similar budget.
Sony CEO Defended Spider-Man Universe Films Despite Box Office Failures
While Sony’s Spider-Man Universe has been struggling to find its footing at the box office in recent years, it appears that the studio stands behind its films — including Kraven the Hunter. In a recent interview, former Sony CEO Tony Vinciquerra addressed the underperformance of the SSU, largely blaming the press for recent films not doing well. “We’ve had mostly very, very good results,” he said, going on to remark that Kraven the Hunter was “probably the worst launch we had in the 7 1/2 years, so that didn’t work out very well, which I still don’t understand, because the film is not a bad film.”

Vinciquerra went on to add that Madame Web was not a bad film either, pointing to the film’s success on Netflix as proof. “Madame Web underperformed in the theaters because the press just crucified it. […] For some reason, the press decided that they didn’t want us making these films out of Kraven and Madame Web, and the critics just destroyed them. They also did it with Venom, but the audience loved Venom and made Venom a massive hit. These are not terrible films. They were just destroyed by the critics in the press, for some reason.”
Kraven the Hunter is now available on all digital platforms.
