An Ocean County school district is considering whether to close a second school building in less than a year due to state budget cuts.
The Jackson school board scheduled a vote Wednesday night on closing the Carl W. Goetz Middle School, according to the K-12 district’s website.
Under the plan, Jackson Memorial High School would be converted into the K-12 district’s lone middle school. Jackson Liberty High School would become the sole high school for grades 9 to 12.
Wednesday’s meeting will start at 6 p.m.
The possible closing of the middle school follows last year’s closing of an elementary school in Jackson.
Jackson school district administrators cited the impact of $22.4 million in state aid reductions over seven years when discussing the closing of the Sylvia Rosenauer Elementary School last June.
The school board accepted a $13.1 million bid for the site in December from Bais Yaakov of Jackson. Bais Yaakov is affiliated with the all-girls’ Bais Faiga School, an Orthodox Jewish school in neighboring Lakewood, the Asbury Park Press reported.
The district may not sell Goetz Middle School. On its website, school district officials say they might seek to rent out the building.
Jackson Liberty High School opened in 2006, more than four decades after Jackson Memorial High School.
Of the district’s six elementary schools, Sylvia Rosenauer had the lowest enrollment, with 265 students.
