If you’re like me, you’re thinking, “What else can happen to poor Alexandra (Julia Schlaepfer) on 1923?” The woman has been through the wringer since she and Spencer (Brandon Sklenar) were separated. Will she fare better this week?
And what of the Duttons? How much more can Jacob (Harrison Ford) and Cara (Helen Mirren) endure? Who else will die defending the ranch? We already know Whitfield (Timothy Dalton) plays dirty (in more ways than one), so what will he do to take the Dutton land?
Here’s what you need to know about this week’s episode of 1923.
What happened in the previous episode of 1923?
In last week’s episode, “Only Gunshots to Guide Us,” the search for Teonna (Aminah Nieves) continued. She and her crew rode off into the sunset and learned how vast the southern U.S. was. With no trees or hilly terrain to hide in, the three were left exposed to the elements… and Father Renaud (Sebastian Roche) and Marshal Kent (Jamie McShane). The heat wasn’t helping either. With both riders and their steeds thirsty, Pete (Jeremy Gauna) went off in search of water.
Fun fact: Did you know Jamie McShane played Zhaban, a Romulan refugee in Jean-Luc Picard’s (Patrick Stewart) employ on the first season of Star Trek: Picard?
After escaping the creepy hobos on the train, Spencer is caught by Marshal Fossett (Jennifer Carpenter) and taken into custody and back into town to verify his identity. One of her deputies even promised him a train ticket anywhere if what he said was true. This is actually good for Spencer, as he would have surely died of thirst or worse. The marshal verified his identity with Sheriff McDowell (Robert Patrick), gave him a blue checkmark, and sent him on his way…with a train ticket. Luckily, this ticket won’t take him to the same train station we’ve come to know in the Yellowstone universe.
Fun fact: Did you know U.S. Marshal Mamie Fossett, played by Jennifer Carpenter, was a real person?
Alexandra can’t seem to catch a break. After having her money stolen and getting a smackdown from a thief, our heroine barely made it onto her train. Once there, she found out meals are not included in the price of the ticket and she had no money for which to purchase them. The food trolley (and perhaps the first Door Dash delivery) guy takes pity on her and takes her to the dining car manager who puts her to work.
In lieu of wages, Alexandra would be fed three squares a day. This seems like the ideal plan for everyone involved until she is groped by a handsy passenger. By her second shift in the dining car, Mr. Handsy gropes her again, this time more…forcefully, if you will. Alexandra, shocked with tears in her eyes and at her wit’s end, boils over, and she beats the guy to a pulp with the silver coffee urn she has in her hand. A couple, Hillary (Janet Montgomery) and Paul (Augustus Prew), the only other people in the dining car, look on in shock and probably a little bit of awe. Unfortunately, this doesn’t bode well for the train company’s Yelp review, and Alex is taken into custody by the train conductor and put in train jail (a locked storage cage).
We saw the first body make it to the aforementioned Yellowstone Train Station after Creighton (Jerome Flynn) disposed of the body of one of Whitfield’s (Timothy Dalton) girls there. Elizabeth (Michelle Randolph), hell-bent on leaving Montana and back to civilization, learned that she’s pregnant, much to both her and her husband’s delight. So it looks like she might stay for a while.
Once they reached Chicago, Alexa was about to be handed over to the police when Hillary stepped in and bore witness to the events that led to the beatdown. With her husband, Paul corroborating the events and upon further questioning, they eventually arrest the guy and set Alex free. The joy is short-lived, though, when she learns the next leg of her journey – a train to Fargo – has been canceled and may not run for months due to the weather. Dejected, she begins to cry when Hillary and Paul see her again and offer her shelter at their home just outside of town.
In the final scene, Pete is searching for water when Marshal Kent sees him. Kent lays chase, and the final shot is a shootout between the two!
