The unwanted 31-year Wrexham record Phil Parkinson can finally end by doing one thing vs Reading

The unwanted 31-year Wrexham record Phil Parkinson can finally end by doing one thing vs Reading

Wrexham could put an unwanted record to bed when they clash with Reading on Tuesday evening.

The Red Dragons picked up a huge 1-0 win over Rotherham United in the league this past weekend.

Sam Smith scored the only goal of the match, which gave Phil Parkinson and co. a massive boost in the race for automatic promotion.

Wycombe Wanderers drew 1-1 with Peterborough United and in turn, Wrexham were able to move level on points with them, only sitting third due to their worse goal difference.

But as Wycombe don’t play in midweek, the Welsh outfit can now, temporarily at least, climb into the second automatic promotion place with a win on Tuesday.

However, if Wrexham are to come out on top when they face Reading and put pressure on their promotion rivals ahead of their meeting on Saturday, they will have to overcome an unwanted record.

Wrexham have unwanted 31-year record vs Reading

Wrexham beat Reading 3-0 earlier this season thanks to goals from Ollie Palmer, Elliot Lee, and Andy Cannon.

That meeting came at the Racecourse Ground, but while they have previously been weaker away from home this term, the Red Dragons are now on a four-game winning streak when playing away from Wales.

This should hopefully give them a boost as they try to end a 31-year record they have against The Royals.

Wrexham and Reading have faced off 30 times throughout history, with the latter securing 16 wins and losing 10.

And up until the meeting in August 2024, the Welsh side had not picked up a win in any competition since 1998.

Even more conceringly, Wrexham have not managed to do the league double over Reading since all the way back in the 1993/94 season when playing in the old Division 2.

They secured a 3-2 win in September 1993 before a 1-0 win away from home on March 5th, 1994.

Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson on Reading

Going into the meeting on March 11th, Wrexham sit 13 points above their upcoming opponents.

However, Reading have climbed up to eighth in the league and are unbeaten in their last five League One meetings.

Ahead of facing Reading, as per Leader Live, Parkinson is looking to extend his side’s unbeaten away run.

He said: “Four away wins on the trot is really good. Every game has been a different challenge. We scored in the first minute at Crawley and we were two-up in the first half at Northampton.

“At Mansfield we scored early and really controlled the game, and it required different qualities to win the game at Huddersfield.

“You’ve got to be switched on as a group to what’s required in each and every game, and Reading will offer us challenges.

“But we’ll be working to emphasize what we feel we need to do and hopefully we can implement it to get us the three points.”
